Lucy, the pups’ mom, has a new home…and it’s with me! I’m warning you now that fostering may lead to more pets in your household. It’s so easy to become attached to an animal, no matter how long they are in your house. I had been looking for a home for Lucy, but realized that I didn’t like the idea of letting her go. So after giving it some thought and weighing the different outcomes, I adopted Lucy today. I’m very happy and she slept through it after being given the complimentary cozy corral pet bed that now comes with adoption. Check out the picture of her adoption and stay tuned for one last post on the last two puppies with their adopter!

This fall, three of Atlanta’s most recognized names: SweetWater Brewery, Park Tavern, and Atlanta Humane Society are joining forces to match homeless pets with new, loving families. Every Saturday from August 14 – September 11, Atlanta Humane Society will set up their mobile adoption bus at Park Tavern, on the corner of Piedmont Park. The bus will house plenty of dogs and cats, puppies and kittens for visitors to meet, play with, and adopt! Every person that visits the mobile bus and spends time with an animal of their choice will receive two free tour passes to SweetWater Brewery. The passes may be used on any Saturday tour. Those who do adopt will receive a special gift, in addition to their new family member! Park Tavern will open early to accommodate guests. While you’re visiting the mobile adoption bus, be sure to also check out Piedmont Park’s newly renovated Dog Park as well as the Park’s Green Market!
What time: 10am – 1pm
Where: Park Tavern, 500 10th Street NE, on the corner of 10th and Monroe

Atlanta Humane Society is thrilled to be competing in the ASPCA $100K Challenge. We have been named as one of 50 shelters competing for the grand prize, a $100,000 grant. The challenge is to adopt out more pets this year in the months of August, September and October than during those same months in 2009. The grant would go a long way toward providing support for pets in need and that is why we are planning events and promotions to raise adoption numbers. Here is a bit of what you can expect during the next three months:
Two-Purr-One – You know one cat just isn’t enough! Thanks to our Two-Purr-One deal two cats or kittens can be adopted for the price of one.
Sponsored Pets Program – This program allows local businesses and individuals to cover the adoption fee of a pet that’s struggling to find his/her forever family. Businesses love to show off photos of their sponsored pet in-store and online, while people who aren’t looking to adopt can still play a role in finding an animal a new home. Just recently, our Facebook friends banded together to sponsor Twist, a senior Chihuahua with heart and skin conditions!
Mobile Adoptions at the Mall – Some of our pets will be cruising on the mobile adoption bus to North Point Mall on Wednesdays during the next three months. You won’t find these pets shopping, though, they’ll be parked outside of Sears from 2 – 7pm.
Pets in the Park – Every Saturday, from August 14 to September 11, you’ll find our mobile adoption bus at Park Tavern, located at the beautiful Piedmont Park. We’ve joined forces with SweetWater Brewery to place our “Society” pets into loving, new homes. Those who stop by to meet our adoptable animals will receive a free Tour Ticket, good for a tour of SweetWater Brewery!
SweetWater Drinking Buddy – SweetWater Brewery has partnered with AHS to promote adoptable pets on their “Tackle Box” variety pack of brews. The Tackle Box will carry the tagline “Adopt your next drinking buddy” with a web address that displays the adoptable dog that has been crowned the SweetWater Drinking Buddy. Sheriff is the current SweetWater Drinking Buddy.
Reduced Adoption Rates – Pets that have been in our shelter for 60 days or longer will have their adoption fees reduced by half as a measure to help them get noticed and find their new homes.
Treats for Adopters – All adopters will receive a goody bag from AHS full of special treats, even though their real prize is their new pet.
Fur Fest – Our first annual Fur Fest will be a chance for adults and kids (both the furry and non-furry kind) to have a fun, free afternoon with our staff, volunteers and “Society” pets. There will be food, music, games, crafts and of course, over 100 adoptable animals, all right here at our shelter.
Join the Club – In Mid-August, we will kick off a new club at AHS, aimed at celebrating mutts of all mixes!
