Day 7 – Back to Beaumont

Filed under: Rescues & Transfers — atlantahumanesociety @ 8:29 pm

There’s a lot to be done here in Beaumont. The animal shelter was hit pretty hard. We’re doing the best we can to help process the animals and reunite families with their beloved pets.

Not a lot of time to chat, but appreciate everyone checking in on us. Will try to catch up later.

Day 6 – Another Plea for Help

Filed under: Rescues & Transfers — atlantahumanesociety @ 9:07 pm

We were headed back to Galveston today to process more animals. While waiting at the check point, where they’re only allowing rescue teams and electrical trucks through a call came in from our supervisor. He asked that we call the Houston SPCA for information and direction to be routed to Beaumont, Texas to help another shelter.

The Humane Society of Southeast Texas was in terrible need of help. So we turned around and headed to Beaumont to help the displaced animals. When we arrived we saw that the shelter there had been hit badly. There are so many animals in need, and so much to be done. We’re headed back there tomorrow. I’ll try to keep everyone posted.

Day 5 – Rescue Teams Still Searching

Filed under: Rescues & Transfers — atlantahumanesociety @ 1:31 am

We went back to Galveston today to process more animals still coming in. The more days that pass the hungrier and withdrawn the displaced animals get. Some are so dirty I wonder how they’ve made it this far. I guess it’s their survival instinct, just like ours.

We’ve seen the police and rescue teams go out during the day to retrieve more homeless animals. At times they’ve had to use the catchpoles to retrieve them. It saddens me to see although I know it’s best for the animals and protects the rescue members from being bitten. You can’t blame them for being so scared. Once they’ve gotten food and water they’ve started to warm up to us. I’ve included a couple photos to show you.

Check back with us tomorrow for more updates.

Day 4 – Oiled Kittens

Filed under: Rescues & Transfers — atlantahumanesociety @ 3:07 pm

WOW! There’s still so much going on and we’re just as busy today as we were the first day. We made the drive to Galveston again today. People who stayed can’t leave and people who left can’t come back yet. We’re able to come in and help, but then have to leave at the end of the day. It broke my heart and brought tears to my eyes to see the oiled kittens brought in. Volunteers washed them in buckets using water from water bottles and gallon jugs.

It’s hard to find the time to blog, but wanted you all to know and see what we’re seeing. I’ll try to keep you posted. Thanks for checking back with us.

Day 3 – Photos

Filed under: Rescues & Transfers — atlantahumanesociety @ 6:15 pm

Just a quick break to upload some photos. There’s so much to be done. At times my heart aches seeing all the displaced animals and other times full of joy knowing we’re helping them. This is bigger than we are and it feels good to be a part of it.

I’ll try to get more photos uploaded soon. Please check back with us.

Day 3 – Back to Galveston

A quick morning note, we woke up in our temporary home, kindly provided by the Code 3 Associates. We slept on our air mattresses and sleeping bags in the open semi-trailer for the second night in a row.

There’s so much more to share and I was wish I had more time, but we’re rushing out to Galveston to help the animals there. Please check back with us this evening. I hope to have some photos up by then.

Day 2 – Divide and Conquer

Filed under: Rescues & Transfers — atlantahumanesociety @ 6:36 pm

We’ve made it to the Houston SPCA to see so many displaced animals. With Houston’s animals in need, we reached out to Galveston to help transport several other special needs animals in need of care. Combined they’ve taken in over 900 baby squirrels, a tortoise, a hedge-hog, an oiled pelican, hermit crabs and 180 animals yesterday and 118 so far today in need of help.

We divided up in order to cover more ground. Kari’s at the Houston SPCA this morning to take photos and information of all the animals. This information will help reunite families with their pets lost during the hurricane.

While Kari stayed to help in Houston, Andrea and Belinda are driving to Galveston to help with the overwhelming number of pets. They will help to reunite with their owners there.

The road to Galveston is covered with debris. Boats and jet skis washed up on the interstate. You can see a line of debris and it’s crazy to imagine that the line represents how far inland the water came. We’re seeing boats where owners spray-painted their phone numbers so they would be able to collect their belongings when they can return. Some houses on stilts made it through the storm with only torn roofs, while others were destroyed.

Some power has been restored to homes and businesses and yet others await their power to come on. Last night, we ate at one of the few restaurants open. Everyone seemed happy even though they’re all in survival mode.

The days will be long ones, most likely carrying over late into the night, but please check back on us soon. We have some photos of the devastation that will make you cringe, but we also have some photos of some very grateful animals that will make you smile.

This trip wouldn’t be possible without your support. Please continue to help us, as we help the people of Texas by donating today.

Day 1 – We’re Houston Bound

Filed under: Rescues & Transfers — atlantahumanesociety @ 1:51 pm

Our AHS team came together last night to make finale plans for the trip to Houston. The three women crew will depart Thursday morning to provide animal care along with several other humane societies around the country. They all leave with one mission in mind – help the animals and people of Houston.

After months of planning and the day is finally here, I loved seeing it all come together. Our special events manager, Schuyler did a fantastic job putting this together. Increasing the bar every year over $75,000 was raised for the AHS animals. Thank You to our sponsors, all the wonderful volunteers and especially our donors. We wouldn’t be here without your support!
